13 February 2023

  • Half-term activities from 18 February to 26 February
  • Castle stories, free trails and competitions
  • Assembly Rooms shows and movies

Stories of heroes and villains, lantern making, treasure boxes, competitions, AR trails, pop princess and movies, are all part of the Tamworth Borough Council programme of events this February half term.

Activities for families are being held at both Tamworth Castle and Tamworth Assembly Rooms this month, between 18 February and 26 February.

Creative writers, artists and storytellers are invited to join in the castle competition, inspired by writing about the animal jawbone that was discovered during the archeology dig last October. Two competitions are running for adults and children, with a fantastic prize of a family annual pass to the castle up for grabs.

A Lanternory event is taking place on 24 February and is a unique opportunity for families to experience the castle at twilight. It invites visitors to create their own lantern in a 30-minute artist-led workshop, followed by a 50-minute storytelling tour through the castle with renowned storyteller Maria Credali.

Running daily during half-term at the castle, is a children’s trail linked to the Tamworth Castle Mill archaeology project.

The family friendly trail asks visitors to help Millie and Michael get dressed for a day working at the mill. Discover more about how we dig up our history and claim a prize at the end.

Funded by RESET Art UK and Museum Development West Midlands, Tamworth Borough Council is also providing free creative workshops in Ankerside Shopping Centre as part of the archaeology project. Anyone joining in will be able to create treasure boxes. These drop-in sessions are scheduled to run on Saturday 18 February and Thursday 23 February, 10am - 4pm.

Whilst at the castle, don’t forget to visit the Battle and Tribute exhibition and download the app for the virtual reality world via the Augmented Reality Trail.

There is something for people of all ages – visit www.tamworthcastle.co.uk to find out all the activities you can get involved in and book your tickets. (Prices may vary subject to event).

If it is a show or movie, you are looking for then get down to the Assembly Rooms. Monday Night Movie Club on 20 February is showing Top Gun – Maverick; Lyle Lyle Crocodile showcases on Tuesday 21 February; and Disney’s Strange World on Friday 24 February.

Why not treat the kids with a pop concert with a big difference? A musical spectacular starring four fabulous Fairy tale Princesses who just love to sing. It’s the perfect mix with two showings on 22 February at 1pm or 6pm.

More music performances take place on 23 February with the Magic of the Beatles and their sensational Get Back! UK Tour. Featuring an incredible cast that not only look and sound like John, Paul, George, and Ringo, they also generate that same, famed incredible excitement that was the trademark of the greatest group the world has ever seen.

Finish half-term with a Sunday evening musical delight with Paul Potts performing his world UK tour – ‘With a Song in my Heart’.

Tickets for all shows are now on sale via: What's On | Tamworth Arts and Events, or call the box office on: 01827 709 618.

Tamworth Borough Council is also offering a new free Augmented Reality Trail – Love Tamworth Trail, is now ‘live’ for families to download and enjoy around the town centre. Embark on the trail to explore the town’s history and seek out 11 virtual tokens by completing mini games at key locations. Children can collect a prize from the castle gatehouse shop and adults can enter a monthly prize draw.

The app comes with a fully interactive map and guide on how to access each point. Simply follow the map to the correct locations then scan the location with your phone and wait for the magic to happen!
