Pledge to say no to violence against women

Tamworth Castle lit up in orange

Tamworth Borough Council is encouraging residents to help put a stop to violence against women by pledging their support to this year’s Orange the World campaign.

Orange Day by the UNiTE to End Violence against Women Campaign: UNITE to End Violence against Women Campaign | UN Women – Headquarters is on Saturday 25 November and also marks the first day of the UNiTE campaign and 16 days of activism.

The colour orange symbolizes a brighter future, free of violence. It also serves as a means of demonstrating your solidarity in eliminating all forms of violence and it is therefore used as the colour of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women. As a show of solidarity, Tamworth Castle will be illuminated in orange on the 25th.

The International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women will mark the launch of the UNiTE campaign, (25 November – 10 December) an initiative of 16 days of activism concluding on the day that commemorates the International Human Rights Day on 10 December.

Managed by UN Women, UNiTE is a worldwide movement calling people in their communities, organisations and workplaces, to come together, and say ‘no’ to violence against women.

Its key focus is on educating and engaging with men on these issues. Although this is a minority of men, this violence impacts on thousands of others every year, in all walks of life and a key message is that all men can make a difference.

The global theme of this year’s 16 Days of Activism against Gender-based Violence, is “UNITE! Invest to prevent violence against women and girls”.

Councillor Paul Turner, Leader of Tamworth Borough Council, said: “As men, we need to stand up against violence to women and make a pledge that we will never commit, condone or stay silent about this crime.

“Orange the World, aims to encourage men to stand up against violence to women, to end a culture which accepts violent behaviour towards women, and we would encourage all men in Tamworth to once more join us in this.

“Tamworth Castle will be lit-up orange on 25 November in support of International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women – Orange the World. Join the global movement with the #NoExcuse campaign to help prevent violence against women and girls.”
