Tamworth Castle Grounds parkrun off to a racing start

A new volunteer parkrun project has launched this month in the Castle Grounds with more than 200 participants taking part at the first weekend.

Tamworth Borough Council are working with Parkrun and local volunteers, to help provide a free, weekly, timed 5k event, which takes place each Saturday at 9am. Participants can run, jog or walk the course. To take part, people must register with parkrun online to obtain their personal barcode, then they can just turn up at any parkrun event they wish to take part in. 

On completing the weekly event, participants will receive a finish token, which along with their barcode, are scanned and provided with a finish time and position which is available to view on the website.

Councillor Andrew Cooper, Portfolio holder for Entertainment and Leisure for Tamworth Borough Council, said: “Parkruns have become incredibly popular in recent years and Tamworth’s picturesque Castle Grounds lends itself perfectly to an event like this; with its beautiful setting, well laid out paths and central location. It also helps bring people together for a regular fitness activity, and encourage more people into the town centre, which is a big focus for us at the moment.

“Introducing a parkrun was something that came up during our Tamworth What’s Next consultation in 2020, but plans were delayed due to the pandemic and lack of volunteers. 

I’m delighted that this has now been launched with an amazing first week.

“The feedback from runners and walkers involved has been overwhelmingly positive. I would encourage people of all abilities to join the parkrun at the main drive in the Castle Grounds, opposite the old swimming baths every Saturday.”
