The Castle Grounds Activity Centre is inviting residents to get more physically active this year and try free weekly activities, every Monday to Friday.

The sessions are available through Active Tamworth– part of Tamworth Borough Council’s sports development, and encourage people with health issues such as obesity, depression, high blood pressure or diabetes, to join a friendly and welcoming environment.

The centre offers a range of activities including a recovery gym, walking, cycling and kids’ outdoor running.

The Active Recovery Gym offers new members an appointment for a health assessment carried out by a qualified member of staff, who will then discuss exercise choices and set an appropriate programme.

The gym is open Monday to Friday 9am to1pm and Tuesday and Thursday evening 4pm to 7:30pm. The first month is free of charge and then £3 per session thereafter. For more information phone: 07972637981.

The government recommends that adults take part in at least 150 minutes of physical activity per week. Walking is a perfect way to exercise and meet new people. Free walking sessions are available from Dave Owen Cycles on a Monday, Wednesday and Friday, from 9:15am to 10:15am. For more information please call: 07896504141.

A free walking group is also available every Thursday from 11.30am to 12.30pm, starting from the Community Together Hub located in the activity centre opposite the tennis courts. The hub also offers a free cycling group for beginners and intermediate cyclists every Tuesday from 11:30am to 12:30pm. To find out more information contact Community Together on: 01827 59646.

Kids Run Free is another free outdoor running opportunity for children, supported by Tamworth Borough Council’s sports development team, which encourages young people from toddlers to teens to become healthier, happier and more confident. The sessions run on the first and third Saturday of each month starting at 9:15am, meeting at the large area of grass behind the tennis courts. There is no need to book, just turn up and give it a try.

Cllr Stephen Doyle, Cabinet member for Communities & Wellbeing, said: “I am delighted that Tamworth Borough Council’s Sports Development Team is able to offer the

Castle Grounds Activity Centre as a hub, providing opportunities for people who want to become more active and try new fitness sessions.

“The opportunities will promote further involvement in fitness and sport and there are also places for people to volunteer and assist to deliver worthwhile activities.”
