Tamworth Borough Council’s hot programme of summer entertainment continues for a packed weekend of music and movies in Tamworth Castle Grounds.

Join Liquid Brass at the bandstand this Saturday, August 4 for FREE music entertainment, followed by an evening under the stars watching the classic films Top Gun and Labyrinth when Outdoor Cinema returns to Tamworth. (Limited tickets are available at £10 per person per film).

Liquid Brass will take to the bandstand on Saturday from 1pm for a guaranteed mix of traditional instrumentation with technological wizardry making an entirely original type of sound. The band perform a range of musical styles to suit all tastes including swing, pop, rock, classical and more, creating a unique party atmosphere to brighten even a grey day.

The Bandstand programme then continues throughout August when you can see a variety of bands, singers and clubs taking to the Castle Grounds stage to delight audiences.

Sponsored by Ankerside Shopping Centre, all the bandstand concerts are free of charge, so bring your picnic baskets and blankets down to Tamworth Castle Grounds for an afternoon of music. Performances generally take place at intervals between 1pm and 4pm (subject to weather conditions).

The remaining 2018 Bandstand line-up is as follows:

  • Saturday August 4 - Liquid Brass
  • Saturday August 11 - Tamworth Jazz, Blues, Country, Folk and Roots
  • Saturday August 18 - 58s Blues Band
  • Saturday August 25 -  Bryan Brindley & Friends

Audiences can enjoy watching two classic movies on a giant screen under the stars as the popular Outdoor Cinema returns to the picturesque Castle Grounds on Saturday evening.

The winning movies for the popular Outdoor Cinema in Tamworth Castle Grounds were revealed earlier this year as Top Gun, for the 9.15pm slot, to be followed by a showing of Labyrinth at 11.45pm.

Top Gun is a 1986 American romantic military action drama film starring film stars Tom Cruise and Kelly McGillis. The Top Gun Naval Fighter Weapons School is where the best of the best train to refine elite flying skills. When hotshot fighter pilot Maverick (Cruise) is sent to the school, his reckless casual attitude put him at odds with the other pilots, but Maverick isn't only competing to be the top fighter pilot, he's also fighting for the attention of his beautiful flight instructor, Charlotte Blackwood (McGillis).

This iconic film won many awards, including an Academy Award for best original song for "Take My Breath Away" performed by Berlin.

The other great classic film chosen for the midnight movie is the much-loved adventure tale Labyrinth, featuring the late David Bowie.

Labyrinth is a 1986 British-American musical dark fantasy adventure film directed by Jim Henson and starring music legend David Bowie. The film revolves around 15-year-old Sarah (Jennifer Connelly) and her quest to reach the centre of an enormous otherworldly maze to rescue her infant brother Toby, whom Sarah wished away to Jareth, the Goblin King (Bowie). With the exception of Connelly and Bowie, most of the film's significant characters are played by puppets produced by Jim Henson's Creature Shop.

This amazing adventure film also features the well-known soundtrack music by David Bowie. This will be a silent screening and headphones will be provided.

Gates open 45 minutes prior to Top Gun and 15 minutes before Labyrinth. Entrance is by ticket only and both movies are for audiences aged 18 and over, due to licensing restrictions.

There are still a few tickets available, but be quick and book in advance as there will be no tickets available to buy on the evening. Tickets are priced at £10 and available online at www.tamworthartsandevents.co.uk, in person from Tamworth Information Centre in Marmion House, Lichfield Street, or by calling the Box Office on 01827 709618. A transaction fee of £1 is payable on all online and telephone bookings.

Cinema goers are invited to bring warm blankets and a picnic, although ‘Woodfired pizza’ will be on sale this year provided by Artisan Street Food Company and Corey’s will be running a bar providing a wide selection of alcoholic and soft drinks, including cocktails.

No glass, gazebos or alcohol are permitted on site, only drinks purchased from the bar. Bag checks will be carried out on arrival to the event.

Cllr John Chesworth, Tamworth Borough Council’s Cabinet member for Culture and Operational Services, said: “An exciting line-up of afternoon and evening entertainment is planned for this Saturday, August 4.

“The Summer Bandstand Concerts organised by our Arts & Events team provide the perfect opportunity for people to enjoy an afternoon of live entertainment in beautiful surroundings. Whether you’re taking a break from shopping, or enjoying a picnic with friends and family, we’d love to see you there enjoying the music on offer.

“The Outdoor Cinema has been a hugely popular event in the six years since it was added to the annual outdoor events programme. The past two years we decided to give audiences the chance to choose the films they wanted to watch under the stars, so don’t miss these two winning choices.”

The bandstand concerts and outdoor movies are part of a great calendar of outdoor events organised by Tamworth Borough Council’s Arts & Events team. For the full 2018 line-up please visit: http://www.tamworthartsandevents.co.uk/outdoor-events
